Re_Work is the result of an intensive collaboration between the multidisciplinary design collective Envisions from Eindhoven and the product developers of the TextielLab. In 2024, the TextielMuseum commissioned the design of a sustainable table linen collection, inspired by the museum’s rich textile archive. This evolved into a challenging and valuable development process.
Envisions succeeded in creating table linen that is as sustainable as possible in terms of production, use, and material. Close collaboration took place with Spinning Jenny, a Dutch yarn producer specialised in recycled yarns. The table linen itself was developed and woven in the TextielLab.
The pattern of the table linen was inspired by diaper cloth damask from the TextielMuseum’s collection, which comprises more than 26,000 objects. Diaper cloth is a simple form of damask historically used as everyday table linen. The graphic patterns, which appear straightforward at first glance but are technically complex, prove their timeless character as they once again serve as inspiration for Re_Work.

Sustainability is woven into the functionality. When the Re_Work table linen shows signs of wear or becomes irreversibly stained, it can be cut along the integrated cut lines—part of the pattern itself—to be repurposed as cleaning cloths. The design ensures these cloths can be neatly finished without the need for a sewing machine, giving the textile a second life.
Envisions: “The question of whether a product is sustainable cannot simply be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Sustainability depends on many factors, such as the materials used and the lifespan during use. We believe that what happens after a product leaves the shop is just as important to its sustainability as the decisions made during design and production.”
Product passport
The Re_Work table linen – and soon all by TextielMuseum products leaving the TextielLab – comes with a product passport. This passport aligns with upcoming EU legislation concerning the use of materials and transparency about their origins.
The Re_Work passport, strikingly red and distinctive in size, clearly shows which yarns have been used in the product and where they come from. A woven-in QR code links to the product page in the TextielShop, where more information can be found about the design and production process.
